I'm so into this store
my story from today's Post
May 27, 2006 -- BESIDES true love, eating chocolate and a good nap, there are few greater pleasures in life than owning something rare, beautiful and throwaway cool - especially when it's a casual quelque chose so difficult to obtain that none of your green-eyed copycat friends can get their grubby little hands on one.
Salvor Kiosk, inconspicuously situated on the second floor of an artists' loft building on Spring Street, is chock-full of these things - carefully curated, covetable "everyday" international items stocked in quantities less than 20. The products' country of origin rotates every four to five months - currently, it's everything Swedish - and once something is gone, it's gone.
"We don't want to be exclusive for the sake of it," says buyer Alison Grifo, who co-owns the shop with Ross Menuez, creator of Salvor brand printed tees and pillows. "It's more about finding something great, sharing it and supporting the people who make it."
The Swedish collection in store at the moment is made up of everyday items like Top Grip brass paper clips ($3), beautifully packaged generic Swedish freezer bags ($7) and a traditional broom-root dish brush ($8), as well as more exotic artisan objects like felt flower pins by Barbro Grytn„s ($45) and Fjallraven K†nken ($75 to $95) - a backpack connoisseur's fantasy.
Already sold out - in the middle of spring, mind you - a portable purse-size red sled by Forshaga ($10), perfect for emergency sledding situations, and designer Pia Wallén's form-fitting pale gray woolly mittens ($40).
Amazing objets and limited, unreplenishable stock? Sounds like a recipe for a stampede in New York.
"It's been mostly word-of-mouth," Grifo says. "Our clientele are mostly creative people, people from the neighborhood, and sometimes tourists who are really excited about finding things like organic Lingonsylt." That's lingonberry jam.
Our advice? Advance directly to Salvor Kiosk and do not pass Go. When the adorable red and blue Skummis dolls ($35) are gone, they're gone - and you will be sorry.

Remember in To Die For, Nicole Kidman's character says, "You aren't really anybody in America if you're not on TV?"
Well, these days, it seems: You aren't really anybody in America if you don't have a website.
So I'm kowtowing to progress and am now pretty much fully up-and-running online. My new site, http://www.danicalo.com, was just published this morning. It's still a work in progress, so some of the links have yet to be fleshed out, but I'm excited about this new adventure.
I mean, let's be honest, I'll probably wind up blah-blah-blah-ing on it and who's going to want to read my narcissistic b.s. anyway? But hey, owning a domain name and writing dumb stuff about myself just makes me feel more important. See? Like now. As cathartic as it is for me to write this drivel -- What on earth are you reading this for? I'm full of baloney, you know. xx
